AUA 2006 Highlights

The 101st Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA) was held in Atlanta, Georgia between May 20- 25 , 2006. The Annual Meeting of AUA is the world's largest meeting of urologic professionals, genitourinary pathologists and basic science urologic researchers.
The CPDR team was led by COL (ret) David McLeod, MD, CPDR Director and Chief, Urologic Oncology at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Dr. Isabell Sesterhenn, Chief, Genitourinary Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) and Dr. Shiv Srivastava, PhD, CPDR Co-Director and Professor at Uniformed Services University.
Among several presentations from CPDR team, the key findings included:
(1) AR overxepression as a promising prognostic marker for prostate cancer progression,
(2) Causal link of a common prostate cancer associated androgen receptor mutation to prostate cancer cell growth and survival,
(3) Effects and mechanisms of frequent downregulations of lactotransferrin (LTF) in prostate tumors,
(4) Correlation of pre-operative PSA levels and prostatic weight and tumor size,
(5) Delineation of prostate cancer transcriptome of poorly differentiated prostate cancers,
(6) Anti-apoptotic effects of PCGEM1, a prostate specific, non-coding gene that shows significant overexpression in African American patients,
(7) Biological characterization of new prostate cancer derived cell line,
(8) Evaluation of PSA velocity for detecting prostate cancer in biopsy and,
(9) North American bicalutamide early prostate cancer program trial.
Research reports of MAJ Inger Rosner, Dr. Bungo Furusato and Dr. Jennifer Cullen were selected for podium presentation. Drs. Chen Sun, Dr. Yongpeng Gu , Dr. Lionel Banez and Dr. Fu presented their findings in discussed poster sessions.
The CPDR mission is fulfilled primarily through its three principal programs – the Clinical Research Center, the Basic Science Research Program and the National Multicenter Prostate Cancer Database– and through a robust education and training program that operates out of its Headquarters location, the Clinical Research Center, and the original laboratories at USUHS. CPDR is also committed to patient outreach, primarily through its affiliation with the WRAMC US TOO! organization and through a heavy schedule of health fairs in which it participates.
