AACR 2010 Highlights

AACR 101st Annual Meeting Presentations from CPDR Washington DC, April 17 – 21, 2010

June 10, 2010

More than 18,000 participants from countries gathered to discuss an estimated 5,500 abstracts and to hear several hundreds of symposium presentations on significant discoveries in basic, clinical, and translational cancer research at the 101th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Cancer Research, in Washington DC.

The Center for Prostate Disease Research, Rockville, MD was led by COL (ret) David McLeod, MD, CPDR Director and Professor at Uniformed Services University, and by Dr. Shiv Srivastava, PhD, CPDR Co-Director and Professor at Uniformed Services University.

Dr. Shyh-Han Tan’s report was selected for a minisymposium in the Molecular Biology in the Clinic section. Dr, Tan reported a ground-breaking study defining the ERG oncoprotein in prostate cancer. The title of his presentation was “ERG oncoprotein expression in prostate cancer: potential for ERG based stratification”. The research presented by Dr. Tan revealed the comprehensive map of cancer causing ERG oncoprotein in prostate cancer. This finding is a major advance in prostate cancer research that was made possible by an anti-ERG antibody developed at CPDR with unprecedented specificity (99.9%).

The following abstracts were presented in poster sections from CPDR scientists:

Dr. Albert Dobi: ERG expression levels reflect functional status of androgen receptor in prostate cancer.
Dr. Hua Li: Effects of PMEPA1 in prostate tumor cell growth and tumor formation.
Dr. Ahmed A. Mohamed: ERG is a repressor of HPGD in prostate cancer.

The CPDR mission is fulfilled primarily through its three principal programs – the Clinical Research Center, the Basic Science Research Program and the National Multicenter Prostate Cancer Database– and through a robust education and training program that operates out of its Headquarters location, the Clinical Research Center, and the original laboratories at USUHS. CPDR is also committed to patient outreach, primarily through its affiliation with the WRAMC US TOO! organization and through a heavy schedule of health fairs in which it participates.
